The 2011 Lexus HS ranks 21 out of 21 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 8 published reviews and test drives of the Lexus HS, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
Car reviewers say the 2011 Lexus HS is trying to be both a luxury car and a miserly hybrid.  In the end, it ends up doing neither particularly well.
Among upscale midsize cars, fuel economy tends to be a secondary concern.  Shoppers here are interested in luxurious interiors and satisfying performance. That makes the 2011 Lexus HS 250h somewhat difficult to assess: it tries to put fuel economy first while also appealing to upscale midsize sedan shoppers.  Reviewers say that in trying to split the difference between the two extremes, the HS ends up being so middle-of-the-road that it will likely satisfy neither upscale midsize car buyers nor hybrid aficionados.
Opinions on the HS 250 are largely based on expectations. When it comes to the Lexus HS’s interior,  Hybridcars.com, a publication accustomed to reviewing only hybrids, calls it “unquestionably luxurious,” while Road and Track dismisses it as “near-luxury.”  If you’re used to the sacrifices most hybrid interior make in the name of saving weight and achieving better fuel economy, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.  But, if you’re used to a more typically-Lexus interior, reviewers say you’ll be disappointed.

On the other hand, if you’re used to typical midsize sedan fuel economy, you’ll think the HS 250 is a complete fuel miser.  Compare it to a Prius, however, and the HS’s fuel economy is a letdown.

The 2011 Lexus HS is unique in that it’s the only luxury hybrid that doesn’t have a related gas-only model. As both a hybrid and luxury car, it’s a rare breed.  As a result, it’s tough for car reviewers to know what to make of the HS.  Overall, they say it’s more satisfying to drive than other hybrid cars.  However, it’s less satisfying that other midsize sedans and can’t return the fuel economy of a less luxurious hybrid. If you keep your expectations in check, the HS should satisfy.  But, if you want good fuel economy or upscale performance and accommodations, you’ll need to shop elsewhere.  The HS is proof that while you can attempt to have it all, odds are you won’t end up fulfilled.
